President Bush, Catholic Convert?

By JML

So I am reading along in the Washington Post and I come upon this story – one that speaks of George W. Bush’s affinity for Catholics and the Catholic faith.  I found it interesting, nonetheless.

Problem will be, of course, that the self-righteous of the world will pounce on it and accuse him of bad faith, if conversion is the path he chooses.  All one has to do is read the comments section of the article.  It is amazing how many people are modern-day Donatists.  One has to remember that as long as there are people in the Catholic Church, there will be sinners in the Catholic Church.

Unfortunately, the holier-than-thou crowd will thumb their noses at this and begin the long and torturous process of ripping apart the man just because he doesn’t fit their numb-skulled version of what a ‘good Catholic’ is.

What about people who highlight some of his policies that are blatantly in contradiction with Catholic teaching (that torture is intrinsically evil, eg). Personal failings may be one thing, promoting sinful behavior in officail policies is another.

That’s fine, but many of those who ‘highlight’ (as you say) the issues tend to go overboard and presume to judge his soul. You know, I would feel better if his critics would acknowledge the good even as they criticize the wrongs, but it isn’t going to happen.

It isn’t going to happen as long as people work on the presumption that the President acts in bad faith on everything he does. It is pretty nauseating, actually.
